Know the Energy Sources for RVs
Generally, a RV relies on two power systems: 120-volt AC and 12-volt DC. To power both systems, you'll need either shore power or generator power, unless you choose to go off the grid and utilize solar power.
120 VOLT AC: SHORE POWER & GENERATOR
The "luxury" items in your RV, such as kitchen appliances, air conditioning, television, refrigerator, and water heater, require more power and are powered by your 120-volt AC system. This system draws electricity from shore power or your generator, and supplies power to these items while also charging your battery bank when it is plugged in.
12 VOLT DC: BATTERY BANK
The essential components in your RV, such as interior lights, water system, overhead fans, safety warning devices, and engine's electrical components, are powered by your 12-volt DC system. This system requires less power and can be charged by hooking up to shore power, generator, or solar, as well as by charging while driving. Unlike the 120-volt AC system, the 12-volt system will continue to supply power even after disconnecting from all power sources until the batteries run out of charge.
